How to Pack Like a Pro

Packing light takes practice, but with careful planning, it can be done quickly and efficiently.  Here are a few tips to take the guesswork out of packing like a pro:

  1. Pack mix-and-match pieces that offer a lot of mileage, such as a jacket that can be paired with a skirt, sheath dress or trousers.  Also pack items that are versatile and can be worn several ways such as a basic black dress that can be dressed up or down.
  2. For business, purchase three piece suits when available – jacket, trousers and skirt.  You can build your travel wardrobe around this interchangeable set.
  3. Create a list of activities you will participate in during the trip, such as meetings, dinners, sports, relaxing.  This will drive the list of items to pack.
  4. Create packing checklists on your computer.  The list can be reused and will assist in keeping you organized and help you to avoid over-packing.
  5. Pack smaller items inside of larger ones.  For example, roll socks, belts, undergarments and hose.  Stuff these items inside the shoulders of a blazer or in your shoes.  This will help you save space and preserve the shape of your clothing at the same time.
  6. Place shoes in shoe bags to avoid soiling your clothes.
  7. The extra bag. Take a fabric bag in your suitcase for things you buy. Make sure it closes, so you can check it as a second piece of luggage on the return flight, when you don't have to be as self-contained as you were when you left home.
  8. Do your homework.  Research the dress policy of the company you are visiting and pack accordingly.  For pleasure, research your destination to make sure you pack the necessities for enjoying the available activities.
  9. Neutral colors work well on weekend trips. Choose a base color - black, brown, gray or navy - and team it with white, taupe or a bright color such as red.
  10. Do your laundry. Veteran travelers pack only enough for a week, even if they plan to be away much longer. When all their clothes are dirty, they go to a self-serve laundry.
