Great pictures sell fashion on the Internet

Great Picture   flash bulb without additional lighting
Flash light never provide enough light
But you don't need to be a professional photographer!

Digital Cameras make it easy to take great fashion pictures; ...with a few simple rules:

  • Do NOT rely on flashbulbs. They never provide enough light. Arrange a few lamps with 100 watt bulbs behind you and aimed at the subject. Make sure the subject is brightly lit before taking the picture with the flashbulb as additional lighting.

  • Provide a clean background. Hang a plain sheet behind your mannequin or model if you don't have clear white walls.

  • Do Not use your camera's "high resolution" setting; these are for printing on photographic paper. Use the "Email" setting if your camera has one, otherwise use the lowest resolution setting (the setting that allows the most number of pictures).
Pictures taken at high camera resolution are displayed at ordinary screen resolution
and are often too big to fit on the screen

Fashion-411 Web Page Requirements:

  • Pictures may be no wider than 300 pixels* or higher than 450 pixels (about 4 inches wide by 6 inches high).

  • Individual pictures can be no bigger than 55 kilobytes (55,000 characters) of information. High resolution camera settings is the main cause of huge megabyte pictures that take forever to load.

These are arbitrary limits set by our system to make sure your pictures fit properly and can be viewed quickly.

Tools for changing picture size:

  • www.resize2mail.com is a free website where anyone can change the size of their pictures. Use their 360 x 480 resize choice, click "okay" then use their "crop" tool to bring the picture down below 300 x 450. You can also select their "on your own" option and specify a height of 450 pixels. (Caution: set EITHER height or width. Setting both at once might distort your picture)

  • Microsoft Photo Editor comes free with Windows XP and is a handy tool for changing image size and image format. Similar software is available on the Apple Mackintosh but we have not tested it. See below for step by step directions for using the Microsoft Photo Editor.

  • A Friend: Canvas your friends and co-workers and you're sure to find a computer savvy friend willing to help. If not, try the copying staff at Kinkos or Office Depot.

  • Copy Centers: Most Kinkos, Staples, and Office Depot copy centers will scan and resize your photographs to a floppy disk or thumb drive for about $12.00.

Most scanners and digital cameras come with software to help the user change image sizes with a minimum of distortion.

Photographs must be converted to .JPG or .jpg format, but this is the easy part. Almost all digital cameras will load pictures to your computer in .jpg format; and all popular scanners will load your pictures in .jpg format.

If all else fails:
Send us your pictures attached to an email (if the pictures are large send several emails with no more than two pictures attached to each) to [email protected] with "Designer Web" in the subject line and we will try to re-size them and load them to your photo tour. You may also send us photographs via the U.S. Post Office to Fashion-411.com, 221 Scenic View Lane, Stone Mountain, GA 30087. Include the email address you entered with your designer web and we will scan, reformat and re-size your photos and try to upload them to your photo tour. We will NOT return your photographs.

* Pixel
Short for Picture Element, a pixel is a single point in a computer image. Computer monitors display pictures by dividing the display screen into thousands of pixels, arranged in rows and columns. The pixels are so close together that they appear connected.

Microsoft Photo Editor:

If the Photo Editor can't be found on the Windows "Desktop," print this page and use directions below:

  1. Click "start" in lower left of Window's screen
  2. Select "All Programs" in bottom left column of pop-up window
  3. Select "Microsoft Office Tools" (usually in upper part of middle column)
  4. Select "Microsoft Photo Editor" near bottom of pop-up column
  5. Select "File" and "Open" and find the picture / image you want to resize or reformat

    To Change image size:
  1. Select "Image" in top menu bar of the Photo Editor
  2. Select "Resize..." from drop-down menu
  3. Find "Units:" in the pop-up window and make sure "pixels" is selected
  4. Change the width to 300 and the image should immediately be resized
  5. Select "Image" and "Resize..." a second time and make sure the height is not greater than 450

Do NOT try to set both height and width at the same time as this might distort your picture.
